naughty vs nice

the hubby was teasing the kid...

the kid: daddy, Santa can see you, and you can get on the naughty list even when it's not Christmas.
the hubby: oh. I better be good then.
the kid: yeah, 'cause once you're on the naughty list, it's really hard to get back on the nice list. and you're getting really close, daddy.
the hubby: I am?
the kid: yes. and I'll be sad if you're on the naughty list. so try really hard to behave. okay, daddy?
the hubby: okay. I'll try.
the kid: yay!

God is real

the kid: mommy, God is real.
me: yes, He is.
the kid: He doesn't let us see Him, but He always sees us. and he hears us.
me: yep.
the kid: and He watches over us. because He always loves us.
me: yes, He does.
the kid: I just wanted you to know that.

eyes wide shut

the kid: watch, daddy.
the hubby: I'm watching.
the kid: no you're not. you watch with your eyes open! you were sleeping.
the hubby: oh. I uh. um. uh
the kid: BUSTED! now pay attention, please.

setting the record straight

some of the kid's classmates got in trouble yesterday for playing in the sink at school, but they were trying to get a sticker that had come off his hand. he felt bad that they got in trouble, and he just HAD to set the record straight this afternoon so the teacher would understand the other kids were trying to help him and not just playing.

"I HAD to tell her because she didn't know. I don't want my friends to be in trouble when they didn't be bad. because helping is GOOD. right, mommy?"

no matter what

the kid: mommy, when I sometimes don't do what you ask, it doesn't mean I don't love you. I always love you. no matter what. I just wanted you to know that.
me: I always love you, too. no matter what.
the kid: awwwwww... thank you, mommy.

babysitting vs kidsitting

me: and April will be babysitting you, so she'll be in charge.
the kid: you mean kidsitting.
me: oh, yes. right. kidsitting.
the kid: 'cause when you have a baby, it's babysitting. but I'm a kid, so it's kidsitting.

reading is FUNdamental

the kid's teacher just called me... she couldn't wait to let me know...

they're doing assessments this week, and he has breezed through the mid-first grade level. she believes he's at end-of-1st grade level, but since he's already read 5 books to her, she's giving him a break so he can continue to do well. THIS is what happens when you have a great partnership between parents and teachers - working together to bring out and enhance a child's natural ability.

*happy sigh*

if you ever need me...

the kid: if you ever need me when I'm not here, you can look at a picture of me or you can look at a paper with my writing on it. and then it'll be like I'm here with you.
me: thank you. that's a great idea.
the kid: and remember I love you forever.
me: and I love you forever.
the kid: and daddy, too. 'cause we're a family.

the kid is really on a roll tonight. I think my heart is about to burst with all the lovin'!

nice mommy

the kid: you're such a nice mommy.
me: awwww, thank you.
the kid: some mommies aren't nice, and that makes me sad. but you are a nice mommy, and that makes me so happy.
me: and you are an awesome kid, and that makes me happy.
the kid: awww, thanks.

snuggles

never be scared

the kid: mommy, you don't ever have to be scared because you have God.
me: yes, you're right.
the kid: 'cause He's always watching over us. 'cause He loves us. Isn't that awesome?
me: yes, it sure is.

snuggles

Mother's Day

the kid: mommy, do you know why I like Mother's Day?
me: no, why?
the kid: 'cause you're the best mommy ever and that makes me so happy.

yeah, my heart melted.

order up!

the hubby: what do you want for dinner?
the kid: a grilled cheese that's not cooked. (a slice of cheese on a piece of bread, folded in half)

a few minutes later...
the hubby: here ya go. (ut-oh! he forgot to fold it in half!)
the kid: um, daddy? that was a nice try, but you didn't do it right. mommy, can you show him?
me: sure. (folding the bread/cheese)

the hubby now knows the correct way to serve uncooked grilled cheese. the funny part is that the kid takes the cheese out of the bread and eats them separately. ha!

got a razor?

while watching the Ranger's game on TV...

"what's up with that pitcher? he needs to shave himself!"

I guess the kid's not too fond of facial hair.

baseball

the hubby and the kid are watching the Rangers game, and the kid is explaining to his daddy what's going on. I guess "Mario Super Sluggers" is more than just a video game after all. ;)

what Mavericks do

I was volunteering at the kid's school, and the Asst. Principal stopped me in the hall and told me that I should be super-proud of him. he read "a whole book" to her today, and she was really impressed with how well he reads, including using inflection/emotion. after we got home...

me: is there something you need to tell me before I open your folder?
the kid: no. I got my sticker.
me: well, Ms. O stopped me in the hall today and said she needed to talk to me about you. do you know what it was about?
the kid: no.

so I told him about our conversation, and his face lit up. the hubby and I each gave him a big hug and told him how proud we are of him for doing such a good job.

the kid: that's what Mavericks do. "I can, I must, I will do my best!"

class picture day

I helped with class picture day at the school today. the best part was hearing 13 little voices say, "hi M's mommy!" as the kid's class came in and getting hugs from some of his classmates... PRICELESS. (although I have to admit, the best hug came from the kid himself.)
